there's this vapidness that has engulfed literature and maybe even the arts as a whole lately. I was at panera this evening eating and finally continuing to read chuck palaniuk's book "choke." it was here that I overheard a group of girls maybe my age or a little over. they were talking about twilight that new vampire romance series turned movie. it's books like these that make me frown. whenever I am at borders, I always am trying to find a book with a message a book with something more than entertainment. I've read the beginnings of many books and many of them fell short of this requirement I had.
these days people don't even read for entertainment anymore. I don't think one of my friends have read a book that wasn't assigned in school. so when a series like twilight comes around and people read it in a week the least I can think is 'at least literacy is going up.' when you read a book in a day or a week, you don't absorb anything and maybe for a book/series like twilight you don't really need to absorb anything cause there's nothing to really absorb. there's no message or pondered question to the meaning of life. I hate books like these. they're for children not 22 year olds. this is what I call a modern day book burning. burning through the pages blankly reading over the text that's going "through one ear and out the other."
everyone thinks they just don't have the time to sit down and read. they assume that when reading they have to read a large portion. this is not true. to truly understand an author's message, a book's purpose you read it in parts. that's why there are chapters. you read a chapter and put it down reflect on what happened. maybe even reread the chapter. I don't think I've ever rushed through a book. I never even read a book for school. I think I stopped that after middle school. the only book I read was the Great Gatsby but that was rushed so I need to read it again. anyway, as im sitting here reading parts of the chapter I just read of "choke" I can feel my brain just tingling and really thinking over the words and sentences palaniuk has crafted together.
I always buy books. right now I probably have a list of at least 50+ I still have to read. I have books that were gifts some two or three years ago. my mom always bought me the best books and I love to read. so if any of you that read this have any great recommendations please pass them along. here's mine :
the phantom tollbooth by norton juster
anything by chuch palaniuk and kurt vonnegut
the glass house (a memoir)
-merry christmas
